We haven't done a NBA Player Profile in a while, but we were inspired by this post by With Malice, who is setting up tomorrow, April 5th, as "Unsung Player Day" in the NBA. Well, who in the NBA is more unsung than these 12th men we have profiled over the season? And with that, we're going to set it off with short profiles of a few of the 12th men on the worst team in the NBA this season - the Miami Heat.
Joel Anthony:
Joel Anthony is a 6'9, 260 left-handed rookie center with the Miami Heat. Born in 1982 in Montreal, Quebec, he pronounces his first name "Jo-el", and probably looks up to Jamaal Magliore. He attended the prestigious Canadian private high school of Selwyn House School in Montreal.
He attended UNLV from 2005-2007, and was the star of the Running Rebels. Here he is meeting a fan, in a poorly written commercial:
Joel Anthony was undrafted after school, but signed with the Heat. He has played 17 games since March, including one start. In case you are curious how a 24-year old ends up playing NCAA Div. 1 basketball: after graduating from Selwyn, he attended Dawson College in Canada. He was cut from their basketball team. After Dawson, he then made his to Pensacola Junior College, where he graduated in 2004. He was first team all-conference there, averaging 9 ppg and 3.5 bpg. He then transferred to UNLV.
He's a great blocker, as evidenced by this rejection of a Chris Bosh dunk ("I represent Canada for real, fool"):
He's also developing a strong finishing game, as evidenced by this stuff over Ji:
Finally: this seems an appropriate time to post a song written by another Joel, entitled "Anthony's Song":
That's right - I'm boxing out. Shot out to Mr. Cacciatore's!
