We've obviously never been fans of the Boston Red Sox, or their organization, but we have to give them some props today. Kinda.
The Red Sox players all took a vote, and are currently boycotting their final spring training game, and possibly their game in Japan (Opening Day game against Oakland) because they are unhappy that MLB (or someone) has failed to follow through on their promises. In particular, coaches and trainers were promised money ($40,000 in some cases) for making the trip, but apparently that offer did not come through.
"[Red Sox manager] Francona said he doesn't care about himself but that in some cases the $40,000 represents some two-fifths of a coach's salary. The Red Sox are scheduled to face the Oakland Athletics in two season-opening games in Tokyo on March 25 and 26."
They are possibly forfeiting two games (though, knowing MLB, they would just redo them in Oakland, and pocket the extra cash from the gate) because of principles. The real issue here, as Curt Schilling made clear in his quotes on the topic, seems to be that MLB is failing to keep its promises. It's a labor dispute, in other words.
Hard to knock the Sox on this one, though. It just seems morally fine when the issue involves bonuses and comp pay for coaches and trainers, who are already pretty low salaried by baseball standards.

Cobra Brigade has a post up on my picks for the NCAA tourney this year. Yes, I have Georgetown beating Memphis in the finals. Go ahead and point out what an idiot I am. Of course, please do so before the tournament starts, and make sure to tell me who you have picked to play in the Finals.
We've been busy with some tax stuff, and some major changes that happening with the site, over the past two weeks. Apologies for the lower than normal content, but that will soon not be as much of a problem (going forth). Also on the way - an Olympic Preview for tomorrow, plus a few more posts.
