It's becoming a bit of an annual tradition for SML now, but I always look forward to Vegas Watch's post on the Best Props (propositional bets) for the Super Bowl.  This year they aren't going that route, but instead they are pointing out the Most Ridiculous Super Bowl XLII Props.

Among their choices?  The "How many times will Joe Buck mention Peyton Manning's name during the broadcast?"  The over/under is 5.5.  Considering that this bet is only limited to Joe Buck (other broadcasters do not count apparently), hmm... maybe the under.

The only way to get these four guys to all agree...They did find (with some help from Lozo) what I think is the best bet of all: "Will the entire Fox pre-game team pick the Patriots to win the Super Bowl?"
Yes -180
No +140

I have to go with "no".  Like Vegas Watch wrote, someone will go against the grain.  And you're getting +140 for this bet?  Take it!

There are some other good prop bets they found (check out their full list, especially #2 and #1), but we have some bets of our own here:

Which hand will Pam Oliver be holding the microphone in when she first appears on camera (Left vs. Right).
Left is +150
Right is -180

We're naturally inclined to lean with our boys the left hand, but all indications are that Pam Oliver is right-handed.

This is your halftime "entertainment"?Which will be longer:  National Anthem or Tom Petty's 1st song during halftime performance?
National Anthem -180
Tom Petty's 1st Song +140

And that brings us to our next question:  What will Tom Petty be singing?

When Tom "Making No Hits Since '93" Petty was chosen to be the halftime performer this year, it made sense.  The NFL likes to alternate when it comes to performers - a "risky" one this year, a "safe" one next year.  Going back, here are some of the performers over the last decade:  Prince, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake (the famous "oops" pick), Shania Twain + No Doubt + Sting, U2, Aerosmith + Nelly + Mary J. Blige + Britney Spears.

This year's pick is official Tom Petty + Kylie Minogue + Soulja Boy + Akon.

So Tom Petty gets about 12 minutes, but has to share at least half of it with the other artists.  Let's project it as maybe 8 Minutes of Petty.  Song options?

He can play new material (he is going on tour in the summer, so this is a great opportunity for free advertising of his newest stuff), but he'll eventually have to play some of his biggest, well known stuff.  I couldn't find odds on this topic, so let's make them up ourselves:

  • Don't Come Around Here No More 10-1
  • I Won't Back Down 8-1
  • Running Down A Dream 2-1
  • Free Falling 1-2
  • Mary Jane's Last Dance  1-1
  • Field (any other of his greatest hits): 15-1
From most unlikely to likeliest:

Don't Come Around Here No More is a great song, but it's too slow and undynamic.  Also, it takes too long to build up, and these shows require songs that you quickly get into, and right to the most dynamic parts.  The best you could do here is go straight to the chorus, and spit it out.

Plus, come on... this is straight VH-1 Era material.

I Won't Back Down.  See the above.

Running Down A Dream, on the other hand, is more dynamic and upbeat.  And it fits in with the theme of the Super Bowl.  You know, running down the dream, winning the championship, going to Disneyland and all that... I would suggest that this should be the one of Petty's "real" songs to close out the set.

Free Falling is as close to a lock as you get.  It's Petty's most recognizable song. He's just play one verse and kick the chorus.  And Last Dance For Mary Jane also seems a lock for the same reasons.

Bonus: Tom Petty on Rock and/or Roll:

"This is an emergency crisis we're in. The entertainment media is affecting everything on the planet in a very negative way. I'm only interested in rock 'n' roll. Rock 'n' roll is a music that represents truth. Your TV channel has taken the word "rock" and knocked the "roll" off the end. You made rock this umbrella term for everything. That's wrong. Shakira isn't rock. These country artists with fur coats aren't rock - or country. I offered a video to VH1 of my band playing in the studio and they don't want to air it because it had musicians playing in it. They want some babe walking on the beach or whatever. I got turned onto this music by watching the Beatles and the Rolling Stones actually on TV playing their guitars. It completely took me over. When you can't see musicians playing any more, I'm not interested any more."

For the record, before she crossed over into American pop, Shakira was rock, more so than Tom Petty ever was.  Just saying, her first couple of albums (the Spanish ones) were dirty girl rock, like a Spanish Alanis.  She got a cleaner, blonder image, and a pop-feel, with her crossover into the English market.  Just saying....

Running Down a Dream has to be played. On a side note, I'm kind of looking forward to this half-time show because Tom Petty is one of TLD's favorite performers all-time...as long as she's happy, I can keep watching the game.

How about that , Lupica loves the Mets deal for Santana !!!!! What a shock . For 3 months all he's been saying is the Yanks are fools if the trade for Santana and give him all that money. All he did was bitch about how the Yanks payroll will explode once again dwarfing everyone else. News flash to Napoleon, If you think your signing Sant. for 5 yrs. $110 -$120 mil. YOU ARE A BIGGER IDIOT THAN I THOUGHT!!!! If the Yanks or Bosox wanted Santana he would be with them and the Yanks little sister wouldn't have him.
