Upon first hearing of the controversial stuff reporters (Michael Wilbon, of course Jason Whitlock, others) were writing after Sean Taylor was shot and dying, my first response was utter disgust. As he laid in a hospital room dying, his family and friends praying for him, what were these sportswriters, without conscience, writing about?
His "checkered past". How Sean Taylor was probably responsible for his own death, you know, through his lifestyle.
I can't even fathom the laziness that goes into writing like that. His "checkered past", often drudged up as proof of his "thugness"? Mostly dropped charges. One DUI charge was dropped after the judge in the case viewed the videotape of the roadside stop sobriety tests, and deemed "insufficient evidence of intoxication". In other words, this is a case in which the police were overreaching. All charges in that case were dropped.
There were other incidents, including one supposedly involving armed assault. The end result of all that would be a bunch of dropped charges, and no felony convictions - just some minor misdeamenors, resulting in community service.
This man never spent a day in prison, from what I can tell.
As I often do in these cases, I went to Sports On My Mind to read what D-Wil had to write on the topic. Once again he exposed the bullsh*t being peddled by the media, who is trying to cover their insensitive coverage of this young man's death with the cover of "thug" life.
Not so fast. D-Wil is the only source I've seen to date that point out that Sean Taylor is not a poor kid from the ghetto/hood, as the media would like you to believe. He's actually a middle class kid, from a middle class neighborhood in Miami (but of course it's mostly black, so it's not hard for the media to pass it off as "ghetto"; someone should point out that middle-class black neighborhoods do exist, and that it's different growing up in Cambria Heights, Queens than in the Soundview projects in the Bronx. They are not the one and the same.), with a father that was a police chief.
Yet we're are to believe his lifestyle lead to his death. Police have now announced that believe this to be a random shooting. Even now there people, sportswriters, commenters... all who would have you believe that the death of Sean Taylor is his own fault.
It's like blaming a rape victim by saying "they were asking for it". No respectable media outlet would do that, and they shouldn't do it here, until the facts point in that direction (and right now, the facts apparently aren't).
Utterly disgusting.

-Cosellout on the topic, including a lot of links to the bad guys here, and those who are taking a stand against such shoddy media.
-Signal 2 Noise on the topic, entitled "Kicking a man while he's down".
From The Washington City Paper (via The Big Lead), a post that takes on Len Shapiro and features these money quotes:
“racist, conniving skunk."

Other links, hopefully more fun:
-Posting and Toasting has a great You Tube clip of David Lee, Dwight Howard, Chris Bosh, Grant Hill, Richard Jefferson and Cuttino Mobley on the Family Feud, playing against their mothers. Very entertaining.
-Here's a bizarre 3-minute PSA that appeared before 1980's adult films on video.
"This brings us to the topic of masturbation... masturbation is also widely recognized as a natural and normal practice by virtually all scientific authorities in the field of human sexuality. In fact, with the single exception of sexual fantasy, masturbation might be the most frequent sexual outlet for most Americans."
"Finally, we would like to point out that the actors involved in our films do not always exhibit the communication, sensitivity, or intimacy
that are essential for sustaining real life interpersonal relationships. Remember: these are fictional accounts."
Ah, the good old days, before the internet made porno easily accessible to the masses. Sh*t, I had to stay up late to watch the Robin Byrd Show when I was a kid....

Completely unrelated to anything, here's a clip from Knight Rider, featuring "Kitt vs Karr".
