Some notes from yesterday's Jets-Pats game, in which New England just dominated, winning 38-14:

-The Jets' opening drive wasn't too bad. They came out throwing for the most part, using a lot of motion and confusion.
-Any time Chad Pennington throws for more than 10 yards in the air against a good team I hold my breath. He just missed getting intercepted by a Pats linebacker. The stats says that I'm being silly, that he completes most of his passes, and doesn't get intercepted too often. Against most teams I don't care, but against a good defense, like the Pats or Ravens... I have to cross my fingers every time.
-The Jets got to the Pats' 41 yard line, but decide to punt on 4th and a short 1. Tough call... I could see going for it early, and setting the tone for the game. Of course, miss it and you just gave the Pats a very short field and probably the first points of the game. The Jets punt places the Pats at the 9 yard line.
-Doesn't matter for the Pats, as they just drive up the field rather quickly (I don't think they ever even had to run a third down play) and score a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead.
-There was a place in the Pats second deep drive, deep in their red zone, where the receiver (Walker?) slipped, and knocked the ball up in the air, and Revis almost intercepted it. Those little breaks are the differences in most games - if Revis gets it, it's 14-7 Jets and the Pats are deflated. But because it dropped to the ground, the Pats continued their drive, which resulted in a botched field goal attempt.
-During the kickoff by Nugent after the Coles touchdown that made it 7-7, a green balloon made its way on to the field. As he was running to kick the ball off, the balloon cut into his path. I'm not sure if it effected his kick or not (I would hope not), but it will probably be the source of a few jokes during the special teams meetings this week.
The first half ends with the Pats up 14-7.
-The second half is lead off by a 108 yard kickoff return by the Pats' Ellis Hobbs. He looked like he was so deep in his end zone that he would just take the touchback, but instead he just took off with it. The Jets had a chance to tackle him at the 9, but couldn't wrap him up. That's not the first missed tackle I saw today - the Jets got burned a few times on the Pats three deep drives in the first half. That's just sloppy, and a sign of a team not being prepared for a game.
-In the third quarter, Chad Pennington suffers an ankle injury on a play. He tries to get up and walk it off, but collapses in pain and has to hobble off the field. Once he does, Kellen Clemens comes in for third down, to some very audible cheers from some Jets fans. Very disappointing moment...
I don't care much for Chad's weaknesses, either. Particularly his lack of arm strength. But he's always been a winner - whenever he's played the majority of a season, the Jets have made the playoffs. He's a smart quarterback who makes up for his lack of arm strength. He's a tough guy who has played through minor injuries, and made his way back from some serious shoulder surgeries. I'm not saying he should get treated like he's Brett Farve, but it is kinda cruel to be openly cheering for injuries to him. Very poor response.
And it's bad karma. Just look at Denver Bronco fans, who openly rooted against Jake Plummer last season, in the hopes Jay Cutler would take his place. Eventually Cutler did, and the Broncos lost the majority of their remaining games and missed the playoffs. And they will this year, too... hell, they could barely get passed the Bills yesterday, needing a last second field goal to win 15-14. 15 points? That's not going to win most games.
-The difference in the game was the offensive line play of both teams. The Jets got no pressure on Brady - no sacks, no hurries, nothing. He had plenty of protection and time to find receivers, and ended up going 22-28 for 297 yards and 3 TDs. If he has that much protection normally, he will put up those numbers weekly.
The Jets have to get pressure on the QB. Only once can I recall seeing them pull the old "Kerry Rhodes safety blitz".
The Jets line meanwhile did not open up any holes for Thomas Jones (14 carries, 42 yards). Overall the Jets were outrushed 134 yards to 60 yards. Chad's injury occured when Jarvis Green got by the left side of the line, the one where Pete Kendall should have been. As I figured, the Jets running game and pass protection were hurt by the absense of Kendall, though not as bad as Chad physically was. Pennington probably wishes he had offered Pete a million dollars out of his own pocket just to keep him around... too bad management didn't. Instead of booing Chad Pennington, Jets fans should redirect their disappointment at their stingy GM.
League action:
-Hey, we called a lot of games right yesterday. We told ya the Bills, Lions, Vikings and Texans would all cover this week. In fact, SML is only 2-2 on his "best bets", and is 2-1 on his "solid bets", but is 7-0 in the other games. Which makes me 11-3 overall. Um, what does this mean? It means that I am really good at guessing the results of the games I am least sure about....

Were they really cheering for injuries to Chad? I heard the game announcers saying how the cheering for Clemens was "a sad display" or whatever, but at that moment I actually said aloud to an audience of myself, "What the fuck are they supposed to do? Boo?" Seriously, shouldn't fans be trying to bolster the confidence of the new guy who's coming in? I would cheer; not because I'm glad that the other guy got injured, but because I would want to be supportive. If the other options are booing or just being stoically silent in solidarity of the other guy, I think they made the only reasonable choice.
