I don't know what it says about us that we've used the soccer tag way more than the baseball tag. Regardless, we'll keep this brief: Argentina beat the Czech Republic in the Finals of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup yesterday. It was a tense game (final score 2-1), but the younger Argentina teams instill a greater sense of confidence than the older ones do.
I won't bore you with the highlights, as they weren't that great. The Best Player of the Cup award went to young stud Sergio "Kun" Aguero, the next star. You might all be sweating Brazil's team, but they ain't got one, much less two, young studs under 22 like Aguero and Lionel Messi. And in 24 year Carlos Tevez, and Argentina is looking as the early favorites in 2010. Hell, I'll put some money on it right now.
And the Silver Ball Award, given to the second-best player in the tournament went to... another Argentine, Maxi Moralez.
FIFA put up 10 goals for Goal of the Tournament for voting on their website. Note that three are Argentine - two by Aguero, one by Angel Di Maria.
Speaking of Angel Di Maria, Aguero and Moralez, here is the best highlight of the tournament. It is from the game against Poland in the first round back in June. After falling behind 1-0 early, Argentina scored three goals, one by Di Maria (check for the sweet assist from #17 - that's Moralez... also peep #10, that's Aguero), then two from Aguero himself. Those two goals are must-see to believe... the first one is unbelievably creative (peep the left footed finish), and the second is just sheer athleticism:
Argentina is for real. Just wait until these young'ems get on the pitch with Messi and Tevez....
