London unveiled their logo design for the 2012 Olympics on Monday. The logo, which cost $800,000 and looks like bad Tetris graffitti (seriously, why not just let Banksy design it - nothing says London like his street art) was instantly panned:
Deadspin's posted about it yesterday, and the commenters went off on it (best line, from Mackey Sasser's Right Arm: "1991 called, it wants it's graphics back..."). To me, personally, it looks like one of those Transformers from the new movie in the middle of a transformation. In any event, here is the promotional video for the Olympic logo. Two notes - one, I like that they spent a lot of time on the Murderball scene, and two... why does the logo keep twitching for 30 seconds after the commercial should have ended?!?
According to a staff editorial in today's NY Daily News, this promotional video "triggered seizures in epileptics". They even went so far as to impy that "the lighting-bolt shape of the 2s in the design" is similar to the "Nazis' SS Insignia", and "the similarity is unsettling". Um, you might be reaching a bit there... when did The Daily News turn into the Post? Actually, here's a link to what they are comparing it to, and wow, it does bear a semblance.
Enjoy that video now, because according to the BBC that scene in which the Olympic diver dives into the pool, causing a multi-colored riple effect, will be edited out. Fascinating....
