Stephon Marbury appeared on Oprah's show on Friday, in which the show centered on low-cost clothing.  Steph's 12-minute segment aired late in the show, after Sarah Jessica Parker's segment (SJP has a low budget clothing line, too).  Seth over at Posting and Toasting did a great job live-blogging it (check it out here).  SML had the day off playing hooky from the 9-5, so I was able to check it out.  Here are my notes on the Steph appearance on Oprah (which also appear in P&T's comments):

  • Oprah introduces Steph by saying he "wows the crowds" in a rhyming, Clyde Frazier kinda way.  I'm inspired to pitch an idea for a game show called "Beat Clyde" in which a contestant will watch a video clip of something random with Clyde Frazier, and they'll trade rhymes on the spot... like for those wild animal show clips, it'll be like a clip of a sea cow mother showing it's offspring some love, and Clyde will say "Manatee with the humanity", and you'll have to beat it somehow.  (sidenote: yes, I'm still drunk.  Yes, last night didn't end until 11 this morning.  Yes, I'm sleep deprived).
  • Steph is rocking a nice cream suit.  Where to dress up to impress the O.
  • Check that - it's not a suit.  He has grayish pants, and a blazer that isn't quite the same color.  Not so smooth looking after all.  The blazer's color?  According to the GF, it's sherbet.  I don't know what color that it, but she explains that it's actually an ice cream flavor. Cue the pic of sherbet ice cream.
  • Oprah: "What's been the reaction (to the sneakers)?"

Steph: "I've felt so many reactions... one lady, I felt her soul when she hugged me..."
Conclusions: Steph's offseason regiment includes groping souls.  Maybe he can try that during a game on Vince Carter, so we can get a definitive answer to whether or not he even has a soul.

  • The O reveals to Steph that SJP told her it was his sneaker line that inspired her to start a low-budget clothing line.  Steph seems not to interested in "comparing the two", since his sneakers are a far more socially conscious product.  The Soul Molester 1, SJP 0.

  • Stephon Marbury gets compared to The Toothpaste Man (Boy?), a children's book I never read, by the ten year olds.  The school is Patrick Daly School in Red Hook (a.k.a. the part of Brooklyn that is impossible to get to by subway, and at the foot of the Battery Tunnel).  I once went to a show in Red Hook.  It took me three days to get back home.  It involved shady bars, crazy ass bodegas, hitchhiking, and swimming.  Escaping Alcatraz was easier.
  • Steph's face is really red.  Like a bad sunburn.  Dude's offseason regiment apparently involves groping souls on the beach.
  • And that's it for the Oprah segment.  As a sidenote, according to the Post, while he was in Chicago filming this segment for Oprah, Steph checked in on Eddy Curry.  How do you think that conversation went?

"Yo, Eddy, what's up?"
"Chilling.  Eating deep dish pizza.  It ain't no Sbarro's.  Did you bring me some Sbarro's from NYC?"
"Nah, I forgot, my bad."
"Hey, you look just like my favorite flavor of ice cream!"
"Alriiight.  Um, see you next season."

Oh, and note to The Mighty MJD over at Deadspin: I don't know if those yahoos over at Nitwit Sports or whatever it is called brought you a drink or something last time you were up in Toronto, but their crap take on "the Marbury interview on Oprah" is terrible.  They were not worthy of a Deadspin link yesterday.  If you were looking for a blog's take on that interview, you should have used Poasting and Toasting's entry.  Or look at any of the top Knicks blogs (note: I'm the #1 Knicks blog according to Lowpost.  Yay!  Somehow we passed Posting and Toasting and KnickerBlogger, and are at #15 overall.  We are ahead of The Nemesis, too.  We'll be dropping down soon, but we're gonna enjoy our moment!).  If you were just looking for something funny, well... they ain't.  If you were looking to support a new blog, I'm all for that, and I wish these guys the best, but... you should have waited until they had something worth linking to.  Their piece was awful; I'm not a big Oprah fan, but I find it lame to see them portraying a well-known black celebrity as a stereotype (one more fitting of Mo'Nique or something).  Especially when you can spoof Oprah far more accurately.  It's like stereotyping Stephen Harper (or whoever is in charge of Canada) using Jim Carrey as your model.  Lazy.

Bonus:  Here's the highlights from Stars on Star last episode (featuring the great Jim Brown):

On the real, I'm starting to really appreciate the floating chair thing.  Plus the cool background imaging of what is being said... it's like that Men At Work video.  Steph needs to stop slouching, though.  Stand up straight and pretend you ain't bored!

Somehow, you manage to work in three links to P&T. You're my best friend.

By the way, if you have any ideas for Knick stuff to do- something collaborative, perhaps- let me know. I'm completely at a loss.

That's really, funny, because I was going to say the same thing to you... next time something during the offseason like this comes up (a Marbury interview on Oprah), drop me a note, and maybe we can work on a combined post or something.

And I'll try to think of other ideas. Maybe a roundtable with the other big Knicks bloggers for the draft? Off-season moves? Maybe compile a list (but not just a list, but like a post rundown) of Knick's bloggers (and fans in general) most memorable Knick moments? Like, obviously all the big stuff would come up - Larry Johnson 4-pt play, Allan Houston beats the Heat, Reggie Miller, Charles Smith... but it might be fun to share those other random moments that are memorable. For me, it would be the little things, like Charles Oakley chasing a scared Nick Anderson around the court to foul him, the Trent Tucker shot, some of the old skool brawls (like the 91-94 ERA)... stuff like that. How about each blogger has to submit 3-5 big moments, and 3-5 small, personal moments?

I was feeling exceptionally generous with the links today!
