The scene of his demise A once promising future as a dominant closer came to an end last night, after Lidge blew another save opportunity, this time to Xavier Nady and the Pirates with two outs in the 9th.
Lidge’s career first began ailing after surrendering a home run to Albert Pujols in the 2005 All-Star game. Pujols got to Lidge again in the 9th inning of Game 5 of the 2005 NLCS.  Since that moment Lidge has stopped being the dominant closer he once was.  Yesterday his career as a closer officially passed away. The official cause of death was Mark Wohlers' Disease, transmitted via Albert Pujols' bat.  R.I.P.
