Gustavo Chacin is on the hill tonight, attempting to stop the Royals from doing something embarrassing to the Jays. Namely, winning a series against them. The series is tied one apiece, and the Royals are sending converted reliever Jorge De La Rosa, who went seven innings against the Tigers in his season debut. Jorge allowed only four hits, three walks and one run in his outing, and picked up a win. On the other hand, his career ERA is 5.66 and WHIP is 1.795.
Chacin vs. the KC Royals: Gustavo allowed three earned runs (all on solo homers) in his season debut against the Devil Rays. He allowed six hits in total in six innings, with no walks and two strikeouts. Chacin struggled a bit last season in the first inning of games; in 17 1st innings in his starts, he allowed 5 homers and 12 earned runs. He didn't pitch against the Royals last season, but he did go 6-1 at the Rogers Centre (with a 6.06 ERA, though).
Keys to the game for the Jays: Jorge De La Rosa has control issues, so the hitters need to stay patient. De La Rosa will give up the free passes, allowing for the potential of big innings. De La Rosa also struggles his second and third times through the lineup (8.72 ERA the second time through a lineup in 2006), so expect the Jays to strike in the third or fourth innings.
Trends:
- Chacin's control was great last time out, throwing 60 of 82 pitches for strikes and getting ahead of hitters.
- With Doc Oct Dotel on the DL, the Royals used Joakim Soria as both the setup man and closer in yesterday's win. He pitched two shutout innings, striking three out without allowing a baserunner. No idea if he'll be used again today in a close game, but fantasy baseballers should keep an eye on this.
- David DeJesus is a hot hitter for the Royals, going 3-5 yesterday to raise his average to .375. The rest of the Royals lineup is anemic.

Picked up Soria late last night. Gotta be a better option for the Royals than Riske, right?
